When I first moved to Cali (22 years ago!), I had all kinds of fun experiencing the Los Angeles stereotypes.
Muscle beach. (Well, the beaches in general)
Hollywood night life.
Beverly Hills splendor.
The entertainment industry at large.
I had a trip to The Playboy Mansion on my bucket list.
Just for one day, I wanted to see what it would feel like to be a Playboy Bunny.
Lemme tell you. It was a trip. One visit was enough for a lifetime.
Here’s what I learned:
No amount of money is worth sacrificing your dignity and self-respect. And you will be tested! No amount of sex, drugs or alcohol can hide misery. The women were stunning and the men were clearly uber wealthy. And everyone seemed deeply unhappy, while they tried to bury their feelings in substances and each other. The despair was so palpable, it was sticking to my skin. There’s no amount of extravagance or beauty that can hide someone’s true personality. There’s no kind of facade or veneer thick enough to disguise undealt with distortion or wounding. Oh sure, it may distract you for a while, like a shiny toy at the bottom of a pool. But blink… and the veneer drops away, leaving only what’s underneath. Superiority is most often a disguise for inferiority. That is being band-aided with a bottomless pit of stuff, people and substances. There are some people who genuinely treat others like toys, and only respond to firm boundaries. The only way to be left alone, was to hide in the topiary by myself until it was time to leave. I simply removed myself completely.Riches are like social media, darling one.
It looks all fancy and glamorous from afar, but get up close and you’ll see the cracking paint and tearful, sleepless nights exactly like you experience in your own life.
By all means, be wealthy! Have ALL of the life experiences you desire.
But prioritize knowing who you are, what you stand for and what you want to leave behind after you are gone.
Because money can’t buy integrity & authenticity.
It can only amplify it!
